Profile
Yuki Hirata entered the Kodo Apprentice Centre in 2015 and became a Kodo member in 2018. On stage, Hirata is mainly featured on taiko drums, bamboo flutes, and metal percussion instruments. His taiko playing has a lyrical quality, even when he plays the biggest drums on stage as demonstrated by his powerful O-daiko base rhythm performance in “Kodo One Earth Tour: Tsuzumi.” Hirata has a strong presence on stage with more intricate and delicate instruments, too, showing his expressive range and agility through his bamboo flute and chappa (cymbal) playing.
In recent years, Hirata has added even more strings to his bow. Alongside his performance activities, he composes, arranges, and produces recordings, all while running Kodo’s lively Japanese Twitter account. His abundant ideas and swift actions continue to support the ensemble’s creative and collaborative ventures. From virtual collaborations with international artists and composers to live collaborations with popular vocaloid Hatsune Miku, Hirata is often at the forefront on the Kodo side, liaising with fellow artists with a big smile. In 2022, Hirata served as the director of Earth Celebration’s Harbour Concert finale “MIYAVI x Hiromitsu Agatsuma x Kodo.”
