Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. The ensemble was founded on the concept of “living, learning, and creating.” Kodo is dedicated to learning performing arts from all over Japan and around the world, as well as creating and sharing its own unique, innovative forms of artistic expression.

Kodo’s activities are managed by the following three separate entities.

Kitamaesen Co., Ltd.

Kitamaesen, Kodo’s mother company, serves as a base from which Kodo interacts with the rest of the world, sharing the culture unique to Sado Island. The name of this company comes from the “Kitamaebune” or northern-bound ships which once flourished in the Japan sea, carrying people, goods and culture from port to port in Edo-period Japan.

Kodo Cultural Foundation

Thanks to the support of many friends, the Kodo Cultural Foundation was established in 1997 in order to increase the range of activities Kodo could engage in on their home of Sado Island.

Otodaiku Co., Ltd.

Established in 1988, Otodaiku (Sound Carpenter) deals mainly with the development, sales, and copyright maintenance of Kodo music.
