An exhibition featuring the newest faces of Kodo, “Aoi Taiko” (Green Taiko), is now underway in Tokyo’s Nakameguro. Photographer Lui Araki came to Sado Island to capture the young Kodo apprentices in their local surroundings, a visit that resulted in a collection of twenty portraits and nine videos.

Their sound has no audience,
They perform without a spotlight.
All they have is their own bodies.
Yet they believe in themselves and continue to drum,
Which struck me as simultaneously futile and beautiful.
These are true-to-life portraits
Of unknown people with strong resolve.
