Hatsune Miku: a virtual singer who continues to captivate the world, soaring far beyond the genre of vocal synthesis software.

Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble: a pioneer of Japanese performing arts that shares Japan’s spirit and culture on tours all over the globe.

In 2017 and 2018, the Hatsune Miku x Kodo Special Performances saw the sound of these two exemplary forms of Japanese culture conjure a brand new realm, brimming with infinite possibilities. Many people shared their hopes to see that astonishing collaboration again.

Two years later, we announced the long-awaited return of Hatsune Miku x Kodo to Tokyo’s NHK Hall in the summer of 2020. However, this event was canceled soon after due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now five years on, the wait is over!

In June, we hope you’ll join us for “Hatsune Miku x Kodo Special Live 2023 -Musubi-.”
We’re excited to create an exhilarating performance experience for you all.

Hatsune Miku

Released in 2007 as a “software” which enables anyone to make their computer sing by entering lyrics and melodies. As a massive number of users created music using the software and posted their works on the Internet, Hatsune Miku quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon. Since then, Hatsune Miku has gained much attention as a character, involved in many fields such as merchandising and live performance as a virtual singer.
Hatsune Miku has appeared as a prima donna in Isao Tomita’s “Symphony Ihatov” along with his posthumous work “Doctor Coppelius” and has performed as the opening act for Lady Gaga’s North America tour. From 2014 to 2020, Hatsune Miku’s world tour series “MIKU EXPO” held a total of 68 performances in 30 cities. From 2016 to 2019, concerts were also held every single year in China. In 2022, Japan’s largest Hatsune Miku event “Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai” celebrated its 10th anniversary. Regardless of the pandemic, we have actively held concerts that made full use of technology such as online and XR concerts.
Hatsune Miku had also contributed to the preservation and promotion of traditional Japanese culture, such as collaborations with ukiyoe woodblock print craftsmens who inherited traditional techniques, and collaborations with Fuyuki Kosode and Mikaeri Bijinzu as a part of an important cultural property restoration projects. These were featured as the “150 years later national treasure candidate” at the Tokyo National Museum’s “Our National Treasure: 150 years in the Future Exhibition”.

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Since the group’s debut at Berliner Festspiele in 1981, Kodo has given over 6,500 performances in 53 countries on five continents. Many of these performances were held under the “One Earth” banner, a theme that embodies Kodo’s desire to transcend language and cultural boundaries, all while reminding their audiences of the common bonds we all share as human beings. The ensemble also participates in a wide range of projects and events, which includes headlining major international festivals, contributing to motion picture soundtracks, and collaborating with artists and composers from myriad genres. Kodo’s willingness to challenge preconceptions of music continues to produce startling new fusion and forms. The group’s creative activities, mission, and lifestyle based on Sado Island constantly garner attention from the global arts world and inspire artists in diverse fields.
