—Tomoe—
Spirit, technique, physique
Resonating as one
Often made from three comma-like swirls said to represent a whirlpool, the tomoe pattern is regarded as a good omen in Japan. Perhaps you’ve seen this talisman that adorns some of Kodo’s largest drums.
Playing taiko requires spirit, technique, and physique. When these three meld as one, the sound swirls like the tomoe. That’s when the resonance of the taiko reaches its zenith.
The tenacious cast features Kodo’s next generation led by two authorities in the group—Eiichi Saito, an anchor in the ensemble since the early days, and Tomohiro Mitome, a mainstay who celebrates his 30th year in the ensemble in 2020. With each beat, each performer conjures sound. Each new beat lands on the one before it, layering to create a story like leaves in a book. Tomoe is a compilation of individual quests for perfectly crafted sound, honed with drive and intention, one beat at a time.
The 2020 season marks our 8th year presenting special performances in Tokyo’s Asakusa. I hope you’ll join us in the heart of the capital this summer to experience the sound of our taiko live. In Tomoe, Kodo will endeavor to harness the full potential of our collective spirit, technique, and physique to captivate the audience within a whirling realm of feed-good sound.
