About “Shiver”

Koshiro Hino is a band member and composer of the bands “goat” and “bonanzas,” and also known for various activities such as the solo-project YPY; and Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble will celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2021. Their collaboration started out with an email from one of Kodo’s members. All the music was composed after their month-long stay in the Sado Island, and the whole film was recorded and shot on the island, mainly at Kodo Village inside Kodo’s rehearsal hall, amid record-breaking heavy snowfall in December 2020.

Toshiaki Toyoda is the filmmaker who translated Koshiro Hino and Kodo’s collaboration work into a new audio-visual experience. He is also known for the films “Blue Spring” and “Hakai no Hi”. “Hakai no Hi” was his only film shot and released last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released worldwide on July 24, 2020, which was set to be the first day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The film won the Director’s Award at Italian film festival, Oltre lo specchio 2020, and also received acclaim as the best Japanese film entry.

“Shiver” was produced to provide an unique music experience for audiences to enjoy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This unique 89 min. video work has no dialogue, and it narrates its story with just sound and images.

Note: This project was conducted with strict COVID-19 safety measures in place from start to finish. All cast and crew took PCR tests immediately before filming and recording commenced, confirming negative tests for all involved before proceeding.
