Kodo Performance in Asakusa 2024
Evermore

Perpetual rhythms. Profound resonance. Forevermore.

In 2024, Kodo will present a new production exclusively at Asakusa Public Hall.
Directed by Masayasu Maeda, Evermore promises to be a high-spirited programme fitting for this special, vibrant part of Tokyo.

Changing to stay the same

Tradition and innovation.
I think most people see these as antonyms. Yet in Asakusa, I see them side by side.
Every year we perform in Asakusa, and over time I felt compelled to try to make something new that follows the time-old ways of creating new things.

Does continuing to be Kodo mean preserving the pieces we perform?
Or upholding the spirit of the group?
The costumes we wear, the music we play?
How much of that is Kodo, and is there a line where we stop being Kodo?

We accept that nobody has clear answers about what Kodo is or isn’t.
And to find those boundaries, we keep changing and viewing our own work as far from done.
For Kodo to keep being Kodo, we keep deconstructing Kodo. Stepping away from that dualism.

When we share this time and space together in Asakusa, we’d love to contemplate the decade ahead with you all, and the fifty years beyond that. To reflect on Kodo now, and forevermore.
