Nov. 19 (Sun), 2017 “KODO × Kids Dance” Showcase Performance (Niigata City)

Since 1998 Kodo has presented its upbeat “Interactive School Performances” at elementary, junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. This close-up, hands-on performance program has provided a fun opportunity for over 380,000 school children to experience taiko with Kodo at school, surrounded by their peers.

In 2012, martial arts and dance were integrated into junior-high physical education lessons in Japan following a revision of government course guidelines by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Kodo’s activities have always focused on sharing the joy of taiko with people far and wide in the hopes of bringing audiences closer to the instrument, each other, and our group. Following this curriculum revision, we added a new initiative to our catalogue: the development of children’s dance programs based around original taiko music.

From 2017, Kodo has been working on this new project with Ms. Yoko Yagishita, a former NFL & NBA cheerleader and the head of Niigata dance studio, Studio Candle. On Aug. 26, we presented “KODO x Kids Dance” for the very first time in Niigata City. For now, we will continue to share this project in our home area of Niigata, and we hope that it will grow and catch on throughout Japan.
The next “KODO x Kids Dance” presentation will be held in November 2017 and it will feature brand-new taiko music that Kodo members composed especially for this project. We look forward to showcasing this original music in Niigata City with a cast of energetic dancing children and special guest artists Tokyo Girls, led by Yoko Yagishita; renowned choreographer to leading artists including SMAP, Jun; and Atsushi from Blueprint. We hope to see you there!
