Kodo Special Performance in Asakusa “Iki” (Taito Ward, Tokyo)

Kodo returns to Tokyo’s Asakusa in June 2019 with a brand new production entitled “Iki,” directed by Yuichiro Funabashi.

Sound Ignited by a Single Beat

Kodo held its first concert series at Asakusa Public Hall in 2013, so our next season in 2019 will mark our seventh year performing in this vibrant part of Tokyo.

We’d love nothing more than for people to say, “Early summer in Asakusa means one thing: Kodo!”
That would be music to our ears.
Each summer we return to a home-like welcome from the people of Asakusa, who enthusiastically support our back-to-back concerts. Our performances are fuelled by their passion and the energy of the bustling, historic Asakusa area.

Iki means “cultured” or “discerning.” I think the nuance of this Japanese word describes the folks of Asakusa to a T.

With them in mind, we decided to create a new programme that couples the spirit of the locals and the unique sound that resonates in the Public Hall each summer when we beat our drums. We hope this performance causes a new chemical reaction of sorts, something unique to Kodo and Asakusa.

As for Kodo, perhaps “unsophisticated” better describes us when we play taiko, gritting our teeth and dripping with sweat. I wonder…if you earnestly repeat the same unrefined action over and over again, perhaps sublimation into something refined is possible?

One beat is all it takes to set something new in motion.
Sound ignited by a single beat.
