Rehearsals for ‘Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island 2014: Autumn’
We had rehearsals at Shukunegi Community Hall to prepare for the “Kodo Special Performances” centered around Kodo’s distinguished members. Yoshie Abe will sing a charming rendition of Isobushi. In Kawasaki, Chieko and Yoshie will dance to an accompaniment by the male performers. Ryosuke will give an energetic, youthful performance of Onidaiko (demon drumming dance).
One of the highlights is O-daiko, which will be performed by Yoshikazu Fujimoto, Eiichi Saito, and Tomohiro Mitome.
Don’t miss it! We are really looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Hello, everyone! This is Yoshie Abe.
In August, I returned to the stage for Earth Celebration’s “EC Theatre.” This month, I will take the stage again to appear in the “Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island 2014: Autumn.” I will join Chieko Kojima to perform one of her signature pieces…can you guess which one? Please come along and find out!
The performances started today. I look forward to seeing everyone at the venue over the next three days, too!

“Finale of ‘Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island 2014: Spring’” by Shunichiro Kamiya
May 6, 2014
Finale of “Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island 2014: Spring”
The Kodo Special Performances began at the same time as Golden Week, our national holiday period, and many people came to see our performances every day, right up until the finale. This special concert featured the Kodo Distinguished Members, veteran members, my fellow junior members, and Kodo apprentices. I have respected the senior members of Kodo for a long time, so being able to take the stage with them and cheer on the odaiko (big drum) performers is an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.
On the final day, I was filled with emotion and I could barely contain my tears. I will play taiko harder every single day trying to follow in the footsteps of the veteran Kodo members.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone again this fall!
I hope you will come and enjoy walking around the traditional, quaint village of Shukunegi and I really hope you will come to Shukunegi Community Hall to see the next series of Kodo Special Performances!

“Shukunegi, the Venue for ‘Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island’” by Michiko Chida
“Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island 2014 – Spring” started on April 27th. Right from the opening performance, we have welcomed so many audience members from around Sado Island and from offshore. Thank you very much for coming!
These performances are being held in Shukunegi. This village has a wonderful atmosphere, so I would like to introduce it further to you.
Shukunegi flourished in the Edo era due to trade by sengoku-bune (large junks/wooden sailing ships) and there about 100 houses in the village, nestled in this small valley. Many of the houses were constructed by shipbuilders and built using their own special techniques to suit the small plots of land. The exteriors are very simple, but the interiors are gorgeous. Some of the houses even feature beautifully laquered pillars, ceilings and beams on the interior.
There is a bamboo fence at the entrance to the village. Stones and three horizontal wooden boards are stacked up at the bottom of it. The bamboo fencing behind is so long and thin. We are allowed to put our poster on this beautiful structure only during this performance period. When you walk through the central gate, it feels like you have wandered into another world.
