New Release: Kodo “Kaden”

jacket_front_data

Our new album “Kaden” will be released on Dec. 21 (Wed).

“Kaden” features nine original compositions that were created especially for our four recent “Kodo One Earth Tour” productions directed by Tamasaburo Bando: Legend, Mystery, Eternity, and Chaos. In September, we captured the tracks in the latest high-resolution audio at Sony Music Studios Tokyo.

Each piece was honed on stage through numerous performances, then carefully recorded as a unique work in its own right. Each and every instrument shines with clarity thanks to the studio recording and new high-resolution sound. We look forward to sharing this album with you all.

“The Grand Finale of ‘Eternity’!” by Mitsuru Ishizuka

IMG_1329

Our “Eternity” tour, which began in the winter of 2014, held its final performance in Kagoshima on Oct. 18, 2015. Thank you very much to everyone who came to see our performances nationwide!

EIEN2015TO_0029-ss

The Eternity production features all brand new compositions and so many different new musical, physical, and performance elements. We gained so much through this tour and I can really feel that both Kodo and I have grown through this ground-breaking production. While there are currently no plans for any future performances, I really hope that many more people will have the chance to experience this profound work live on stage.

EIEN2015TO_1103-ss

Using this finale as a new starting point, Kodo will continue to work with devotion, aiming for even higher heights and to create even deeper realms on stage. First up is our next new performance, “Chaos.” Please come along to see it!

“Our Performance in Legendary Yabu” by Mariko Omi

Our Performance in Legendary Yabu
Oct. 3, 2015 “Kodo One Earth Tour: Eternity”

IMG_1185

From the beginning of our current tour, the senior members have been saying “but when we’re at the venue in Yabu” so many times and they have brought up interesting things about this legendary hall.

“We have to roll the O-daiko in from outside up a staircase!”

“Last time, we set up the O-daiko cart on the stage even though it was a tight fit.”

“They have a profound love for Kodo at the hall in Yabu.”

As our performance there approached, I got so curious about Yabu from hearing all the different things the Kodo members had to say about it!

Rehearsal in Yabu

Viva Hall in Yabu is smaller than most of our usual venues with just 333 seats and a smaller stage to match. It was such a cozy place accompanied by a really warm, heartfelt welcome from all of the staff.

Rehearsal in Yabu

No matter how different a venue is, we have to create the unique realm of “Eternity” on stage as intended by the artistic director and deliver the production to our audience properly. So during our rehearsals at each venue, we check every element in our performance with great attention to detail, from the angle of our gazes into the audience to how we produce each sound to suit the acoustics.

I felt relieved when we received such warm applause from the full house during our performance in Yabu.

When each and every member of the cast actively reconsiders the essence of “Eternity,” we move with more detail and create sound together with more depth. I can feel our performance gaining depth and becoming more refined each time we go through this deliberate process.

“Abundant Autumn” by Tomohiro Mitome

Oct. 1. 2015

Hello everyone. I hope that you are all well.

This is Tomohiro Mitome, leader of taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo.

October has arrived and we are enjoying sunny days with a slight chill in the air. Some decades ago, there was snowy rain in October, but I think that due to global warming in recent years, the fall season on Sado has gotten somewhat longer.

写真:竹谷正純

Kodo held numerous performances throughout Japan this September with the “Eternity” and “Interactive Performances” touring from Hokkaido down to Shikoku, our “Special Performances” here on Sado Island, and an array of solo and small ensemble projects, too. Each of our two tours included special projects, collaborations, and workshops, so their days have been filled with all kinds of activities.

3

I took part in the “Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island,” centered around our Distinguished Members. This was the fourth year for this series. For the Autumn concerts, we had a cast of eight featuring veterans, junior members, and Maya Minowa for the first time. We gave seven performances over four days during Silver Week. The venue, Shukunegi Public Hall, was built 57 years ago and renovations have commenced this fall to strengthen it against earthquakes and restore it. We look forward to seeing the finished renewal next spring.

The Interactive Performance team finished their Japan tour at the end of September and have returned to Sado to rehearse for their upcoming ballet collaboration in Montreal, “Kaguyahime.” Kodo also took part in this ballet with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal in Canada three years ago.

“Kaguyahime” is a ballet suite by the late Maki Ishii, who also composed Kodo’s signature pieces Monochrome and Dyu-ha. He wrote Kaguyahime for a ballet danced to Western percussion, Japanese court music, and wadaiko. For most of the performance, Kodo performs in the orchestra pit, but there are also some scenes where we perform on stage. The production includes a furious battle scene where the Western percussion and Japanese taiko go head to head.

Here on Sado Island, October is an action-packed month for the Kodo apprentices. On top of their usual training, they will give Interactive Performances at junior high schools on Sado, host live-in workshop Kodo Juku at the Apprentice Centre, and have the valuable experience of harvesting the persimmons, rice, and other crops they have been growing over the past months.

At the end of September, we held information sessions for prospective apprentices in Tokyo and Osaka. Some people know they want to join Kodo on stage, but they are anxious when faced with a two-year apprenticeship and wonder how they will find it training here. Of course, it’s easier to imagine if they visit the Centre before applying, but since it’s difficult for some people to come up to have a look around, we have started holding info sessions in these two main citiess in the last couple of years. Today, our applications opened for the 2016 intake. We look forward to greeting our new applicants as they step forward for this challenge of a lifetime.

In Japan, we say that autumn is the season for performing arts.

We hope to see you all soon at a Kodo performance somewhere.

“Asano Taiko’s New Product ‘Try Before You Buy’ Event” by Mitsunaga Matsuura

Asano Taiko’s New Product “Try Before You Buy” Event

IMG_2551

Asano Taiko held a special event so that people could along to try out the new Asano drums that were created in collaboration with Kodo for our performances. The instruments introduced at this “Try Before You Buy” event are the taiko that people ask us about the most, mainly wondering if they are available for purchase. So on Sep. 21, during the Silver Week holiday period, we joined Asano Taiko in Yutenji, Tokyo, for this hands-on event at Taiko no Sato Kyowakan.

▶︎Watch footage from the event on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzqiFGQWnjc

During the event, Kodo members gave special workshops using each of the three collaboration-project taiko drums. Kodo’s Yuta Sumiyoshi composed a piece especially for the workshops with those taiko in mind. It incorporates some unique grooves that you can create with them, allowing all the participants to really experience the potential of these new taiko.

Shime-jishi Taiko

This small taiko has a crisp, sharp sound that lets a solo part stand out amongst other taiko on the Kodo stage.

This taiko is now on sale thanks to popular demand. We usually play it with one drumstick on stage. Its low tone really complements other instruments, including chappa (cymbals) and bamboo flutes.

Kanade

All eyes are on this one! This is an okedo-daiko (barrel drum) that has independent tuning for each head thanks to special metal parts on the barrel. The two drum heads differ in thickness, too. The incredibly broad range of this taiko is showcased in a solo by Masayuki Sakamoto in our production “Kodo One Earth Tour: Eternity,” directed by Tamasaburo Bando. See the performance live or on DVD/Blu-ray to see “Kanade” in action.

“Setting off on the ‘Eternity’ Fall Tour!” by Koki Miura

Setting off on the Fall Tour of
“Kodo One Earth Tour 2015: Eternity”

IMG_5218IMG_5213

The hot, hot summer has come to an end and the smell of autumn is in the air. Today the cast and crew for “Eternity” set off on our fall tour. Our first performance is in Yachiyo in Chiba and it just happens to be… MY HOME TOWN!

Kodo has been to Yachiyo before and I remember seeing a Kodo member, Yuichiro Funabashi, at a bookshop near the theater and asking him in a flurry if I could shake his hand. I was a high school student at the time and seems like a while ago now.

EIEN2015TO_1331-s

I saw Kodo perform on that stage in my hometown and now the day is approaching when I will perform on that stage as a Kodo member. I will do my best, Yachiyo!

Kodo Online Store: Masayuki Sakamoto in New Release DVD & Blu-ray “Eternity”

Behind the Scenes, Episode 2

The fourth piece on the “Eternity” programme is called Seiten. It is a solo piece composed by Masayuki Sakamoto, which he performs using one okedo-daiko (barrel drum).

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

Sakamoto worked alongside Mr. Yasuo Asano, the company president of taiko maker Asano Taiko, to create the particular okedo-daiko that he plays for this piece. It was developed through trial and error and has a special feature: the ability to tune each head separately. Kodo is really particular about sound and the Asano Taiko craftsmen have tremendous skills, so the combination of their fine attention to detail produced this special drum.

“The Sound of Bamboo” by Kosuke Urushikubo

June 30, 2015Photo: Kosuke Urushikubo

The other day after our performance in Kimitsu, Chiba, some of my fellow Kodo members and I went to visit Ranjo-san.

DSC_0072-f

Ranjo-san is a bamboo flute maker who has been crafting the flutes that Kodo uses for many, many years. Apparently, there has recently been a rise in the number of people who have started playing the shinobue (Japanese transverse bamboo flute). And some 9 out of 10 of those newcomers play a bamboo flute made by Ranjo-san. Ranjo’s name is so well-known these days amongst shinobue enthusiasts, both throughout Japan as well as abroad. I am truly grateful that he helps me choose bamboo flutes to play that suit me the best. Then he gives me advice on how to play them.

Photo: Kosuke Urushikubo

Each flute is made from a living being: bamboo. The girth, thickness of the bamboo, and size of the holes may look the same for each instrument at a glance, but each one is completely unique.

Photo: Kosuke Urushikubo

Ranjo-san taught me that the most important thing to think of when you choose a flute is what kind of sound you want to create with it.

DSC_0029-ss

I am one of several shinobue players in the Kodo ensemble. So, what kind of sound do I want to share with our audiences? In other words, what kind of feeling do I want to convey to our audiences through my sound? I thought about that long and hard. The other members with me also thought deeply as they picked up each flute and played it to see what kind of sound they could create.

Photo: Kosuke Urushikubo

Please come along to see “Kodo One Earth Tour: Eternity” so you can hear the sound of our ideas and emotions through Ranjo’s flutes.

Kodo Online Store: Yuichiro Funabashi in New Release DVD & Blu-ray “Eternity”

Photo: Narumi Matsuda

Behind the Scenes, Episode 1

The third piece on the “Eternity” programme is called Gosui and it features Yuichiro Funabashi center stage playing an instrument that Kodo received from Suar Agung, the past Earth Celebration guest artist group from Indonesia who will return to the EC stage this year. Before the rehearsals began for “Eternity,” this instrument was on display in the entrance to the main building at Kodo Village… and the composition evolved from the idea of playing it to see what sound it would create.

“Beating the Drums, Playing the Drums” by Koki Miura

June 21, 2015

We have just finished our “DADAN 2015” concert series in Tokyo and now we are straight back into our “Eternity” tour around Japan.

photo: Takashi OkamotoPhoto: Takashi Okamoto

“DADAN” is an explosive, pulsating, non-stop hard-hitting performance. “Eternity” is performed with control and fine attention to detail. These two performances are so different, and by performing both of them back to back, we can feel just how far our range of expression is broadening with time.

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

Tamasaburo Bando, our artistic director, said he wanted this production to express the workings of nature. Personally, I think that nature is inherently perfect and beautiful and, as a consequence, the “Eternity” performance is an extraordinarily beautiful production.

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

I want our audiences to enjoy just being in the same space as our performance. I want it to make them feel good. Please come along and experience the natural realm we create in “Eternity.”
