Concert in Yachiyo City, My Hometown

Last year I returned to my hometown, Yachiyo City in Chiba, with “Kodo One Earth Tour: Eternity.” This week, I am heading home again with Kodo for an Interactive Performance on May 14. I am really happy to have these opportunities to perform in my hometown.

“Setting off on the ‘Eternity’ Fall Tour!” by Koki Miura

Setting off on the Fall Tour of
“Kodo One Earth Tour 2015: Eternity”

The hot, hot summer has come to an end and the smell of autumn is in the air. Today the cast and crew for “Eternity” set off on our fall tour. Our first performance is in Yachiyo in Chiba and it just happens to be… MY HOME TOWN!

Kodo has been to Yachiyo before and I remember seeing a Kodo member, Yuichiro Funabashi, at a bookshop near the theater and asking him in a flurry if I could shake his hand. I was a high school student at the time and seems like a while ago now.

I saw Kodo perform on that stage in my hometown and now the day is approaching when I will perform on that stage as a Kodo member. I will do my best, Yachiyo!

“Beating the Drums, Playing the Drums” by Koki Miura

June 21, 2015

We have just finished our “DADAN 2015” concert series in Tokyo and now we are straight back into our “Eternity” tour around Japan.

photo: Takashi OkamotoPhoto: Takashi Okamoto

“DADAN” is an explosive, pulsating, non-stop hard-hitting performance. “Eternity” is performed with control and fine attention to detail. These two performances are so different, and by performing both of them back to back, we can feel just how far our range of expression is broadening with time.

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

Tamasaburo Bando, our artistic director, said he wanted this production to express the workings of nature. Personally, I think that nature is inherently perfect and beautiful and, as a consequence, the “Eternity” performance is an extraordinarily beautiful production.

I want our audiences to enjoy just being in the same space as our performance. I want it to make them feel good. Please come along and experience the natural realm we create in “Eternity.”

“‘Eternity’ Performance in Joetsu, Niigata” by Koki Miura

June 8, 2015

Yesterday we gave a performance at the Joetsu Bunka Kaikan in Joetsu, Niigata. Since we are from Sado Island in the same prefecture, they gave us a very warm welcome with their applause. Thank you very much to everyone who came along.

At the theater, we received these treats.

The presenter gave us one of Joetsu’s own “soul foods”: Sando-pan (Sandwich Bread). I’ve been to Joetsu many times but I had never heard about sando-pan before.

Also, we received two iconic Niigata soul foods: sasa dango (sweet dumplings wrapped in sasa leaves) and chimaki (sticky rice dumplings)! They were all handmade for us by the mother of one of the staff members.

Two of our cast members, Mariko Omi and Kengo Watanabe, are from Niigata Prefecture. Mari loves chimaki and Kengo loves sasa dango, so they were both really happy! We all thoroughly enjoyed these treats!

“Mystery” by Koki Miura

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

I think that one of the highlights in “Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery” is the lion dance, Shishimai. The head is operated by Kosuke Urushikubo, who was an apprentice with me.
To sum it up in one word, it’s “cute.”

When you think of a lion dance in Japan, it may conjure images of a valiant beast dancing at a festival… but this Shishimai is a little different to that… or perhaps it’s quite different?

Please come along and see how Kosuke’s Shishimai interacts with the four female performers on stage.

Another piece to watch for Ajara, which I perform with Tetsumi Hanaoka, who is one year my senior, and Jun Jidai, who was an apprentice with me. In fact, the three of us have known each other since our high school days, so we know & understand each other very well. I would like to show you our trio’s synchronization in this piece. I think you’ll also enjoy seeing the performers operate the lighting under the new artistic direction of this piece!
