“Ebisu Daikoku Live” by Yosuke Oda
Mar. 8 “Ebisu Daikoku” Live
Former “The Blue Hearts” drummer Tetsuya Kajiwara and I (Yosuke Oda) joined forces to create a new unit, “Ebisu Daikoku.”
I had been looking forward to March 8, the day of the debut of “Ebisu Daikoku,” for quite a while. Actually, we had been talking about this project for about 4 years, so it was a long wait. Our concept was to form a band rather than just having a jam session. We wanted to create an entire performance together. So we took the time to discover each other’s timing and breathing and how we drum and play taiko. We compared drum and taiko rhythms and found where they intersect and where we had fusion difficulties. We made use of tiny windows of opportunity in our schedules to create pieces and rehearse together. For our debut performance, we invited guitarist Isaku Suzuki to join us.
We powered through the performance with drums roaring like thunder, taiko howling like gales, and the guitar conjuring an array of different scenery throughout. That hour flew by, but I was left with an unforgettable feeling that will remain with me forever.

“Ebisu Daikoku” by Ryoko Iwamoto
Ebisu Daikoku
“Ebisu Daikoku” is a new unit that brings together former “The Blue Hearts” drummer Tetsuya Kajiwara and Kodo’s Yosuke Oda. Their pulsating performance is making its way to Shibuya, Tokyo, this weekend.
Mr. Kajiwara came to Sado Island for from days, from Feb. 23 to 26, to prepare for the performance. I will show you some pictures from their rehearsals.
They created a storm of sound, rhythm, and beats in the large hall as they rehearsed. They demonstrate that there are far more possibilities than you’d think when it comes to drums and taiko. I am sorry that I cannot do their explosive sound justice in pictures.
Please come to Shibuya to feel their sound in person.
See you on March 8 for “Ebisu Daikoku” live!

“Another Side of ‘Mystery’: Ake No Myojo” by Yosuke Oda
Ake No Myojo
This piece shines a light on Kodo’s female performers.
They perform this piece on stage with dynamic choreography and mood lighting. For the “Mystery” album recording, we aimed to recreate those visual elements with sound by adding that feeling of movement to the rhythmic part and expanding the vocal parts.
Thanks to a year of honing this piece on stage, I think we were able to capture feel-good sound on this recording with ease. I hope you will enjoy this unique audio version of Ake No Myojo.

“Workshop in Berkeley” by Yosuke Oda
Feb. 4, 2015
Hello, everyone! This is Yosuke Oda. I’m in Berkeley, California, with the “Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery” North America tour.
I was invited to lead a workshop for the members of Raijin Taiko at UC Berkeley today.
First, we all introduced ourselves and then we had time to do stretches together. Everyone shouted loudly to count “ichi, ni, san … (one, two, three…), and so did I. Then, they performed their piece Kazoku (Family) for me. They were so upbeat and their cheerful sound echoed throughout the hall. After that, I gave my own performance demo. It felt good to play taiko supported by their energy.
Just as we started to feel at ease with each other, the workshop started! The theme for this workshop was “Create your own sound.” Everyone caught on to what I taught so quickly, so we progressed at a good pace. Kate, who interpreted for me, did her best, too. Thank you, Kate!
At the end of the workshop, I asked them to play their piece Kazoku once again to show what they had learned today. They began with amazing power and volume, and the rhythm was livelier than the first time they played it. They all helped each other like a real family and it was an awesome performance.
Seeing their performance made me think how good it is to be natural. Being natural and your own sound are directly related.
At the end, we took this picture and they gave me a lot of presents, too. Thank you very much for today, Raijin Taiko! Let’s play taiko together again!
