“First One Earth Tour Concert in Nanyo in 13 Years” by Narumi Matsuda

First Kodo Concert in Nanyo in 13 Years

Photo: Narumi MatsudaPhoto: Narumi Matsuda

I am a member of Kodo’s staff and Kodo gave a performance on July 4th in my hometown, Nanyo City in Yamagata Prefecture. This venue has been holding concerts since the 80’s when Kodo began and it is going to close its doors for good soon, so we were invited there as their final event. They began with a Kodo performance and wanted to finish as they had started.

I have a lot of memories of this hall from when I was little and to see the Kodo members perform there, well it was like I was being shown how my past and present are connected.

Photo: Narumi Matsuda

It’s a small town but the concert was sold out! I think it’s thanks to the great efforts of the hosting committee. The audience got really excited and their response even managed to surprise to the performers.

This venue will disappear but I hope that someday there will be a new opportunity for the sound of Kodo to return here again.

“Kodo and Sado” by Tomohiro Mitome

July 1, 2014

This is Tomohiro Mitome, leader of taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo.
At the beginning of June, the rainy season set in around the Kanto area (near Tokyo) and I expected that it would reach us on Sado by mid-June. However, even though they have had rain on the mainland in Niigata, thanks to some westerlies we have mainly had just clouds and it’s been around 24 degrees on Sado most of the time. It’s is a little chilly in the morning and at night.

This month, I’m going to talk about the connection between Kodo and Sado.

Kodo Apprentice Centre (Kakinoura, Sado Island)

When you include the years of our antecedant group Ondekoza, about 40 years have passed since Kodo established its base on Sado Island. Before merging into one city (Sado City) a decade ago, the island was divided into ten municipalities. At first, our group was based in Hatano Town, then it moved to Mano Town, and finally we relocated to Ogi Town twenty-six years ago. The Kodo Apprentice Centre was located in Aikawa Town for six years, then in Mano Town for four years, and then it moved to its current home of Kakinoura nineteen years ago.
Most of the Kodo members now seen on stage are graduates from our Apprentice Centre in Kakinoura. Looking back, almost 200 young people to date have come to Sado Island to become Kodo apprentices. Some of them stayed on Sado after they finished the apprentice programme, and of course we, the Kodo members and staff, live on Sado, have families, and make our own connections in the community by living here and sending our children to school here.
If you want to know why our group chose Sado Island for its base, well, it’s a long story that requires some time to explain. If you are interested and can read Japanese, please read Kodo’s 30th anniversary publication Inochi Moyashite, Tatakeyo. – 30 Years of Kodo –. You will get to know a great deal about our group and learn about its roots. (Note: This book has Japanese text only with no English translation.)

Setting Up for “DADAN”

First, we open all the boxes packed full of our instruments.

These taiko were sent here after our tour in Europe earlier this year, “Kodo One Earth Tour 2014: Legend,” which finished in March.

This is the theater where we have our first performance of “DADAN.”

This time, the programme uses a grand total of TWELVE shime-daiko! (roped drums)

These taiko were packaged up for months on end. We look at their condition and tune each one very carefully.

Tonight is our opening night! I’m looking forward to seeing how the performance turns out!

“Akita Performance” by Akiko Ando

July 4, 2014

Akita Performance

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

When I was a freshman in high school, seven years ago, I saw Kodo perform for the first time and it made me decide what I wanted to do in the future. I’m from Akita Prefecture, and while our performance this weekend isn’t in my hometown, I am still really looking forward to finally having the chance to perform with Kodo in my home area.

Photo: Takashi Okamoto

In the “Mystery” programme, I was given a role that I feel allows me to show my own character well. It is important to feel the air and the darkness created each and every time we perform. I also feel the regional differences in the audience’s response to our performances, so I’m really excited to see what kind of reaction the people in Akita will have to “Mystery.”

“DADAN’s in Spain!” by Mitsuru Ishizuka

July 7, 2014

DADAN’s in Spain!

We, the “DADAN” members, took three connecting flights and safely made it to Spain! Our first destination is Oviedo, a beautiful town in the north-west of Spain. We are going to the theater to start setting up this evening.

Photo: Mitsuru Ishizuka

New pieces, new members… there are a lot of new elements in this new DADAN! I hope the people in Spain enjoy it!

But, first of all, we have to get over our jetlag!
