The Kodo Workshop Performance tour, directed by performer Eri Uchida, left Kodo Village ahead of the One Earth Tour members. We played taiko as we saw them off, without giving in to the rain.

“Performance at Shinon Kansha Nihon Taiko Matsuri” by Maya Minowa

Performance at Shinon Kansha Nihon Taiko Matsuri on Nov. 8 & 9

A small Kodo ensemble appeared at “12th Shinon Kansha Nihon Taiko Matsuri” for the first time in Ise in Mie Prefecture. We performed at Okage Yokocho taiko turret and on the Isuzu River banks near Ise Grand Shrine, giving performances on both days at both places. Twelve taiko teams took part in the festival and it was a great opportunity for us to see them all in action. I learned so much! Photo: Mitsunaga Matsuura

At the Okage Yokocho taiko turret, we were surrounded by spectators on all four sides, and they were within arms reach from us, so it felt very different from playing in the halls where we usually perform. They were able to see our facial expressions up-close as well as our backs, which they usually can’t see when we are far away on stage. It was a dedicatory performance, so before we performed each time we prayed to the shrine, then played taiko with gratitude and respect.

“Workshop & Mini Live Performance in Kushima City” by Maya Minowa

May 8 Workshop & Mini Live Performance in Kushima, Miyazaki

I am from Kushima City so I know the cultural hall there, Kushima-shi Bunka Kaikan, very well. When I lived here, I never imagined that one day I would appear on this stage as a member of Kodo, so today my dream came true.
For the workshop, we were joined by children from four taiko groups. At first, they looked shy taking part with new people and in front of the audience. But Yosuke led them with his unique talk and passionate taiko sound, and after a while the audience started to laugh and the participants loosened up. They played taiko with all their might, trying hard to create sound together as one.

It was a very meaningful day for me to bring the sound of a Kodo performance to the locals in my hometown.

“New Car Ferry ‘Tokiwa-maru’” by Maya Minowa

We performed at the special event for the new car ferry “Tokiwa-maru” before its public launch.

It was the first time for me to play taiko on a moving ship.

The weather was bad, so it rolled and rocked. Even when we bowed at the end of performance, it was hard to stand straight. This ferry is bigger and more beautiful than I expected! I know we will use this ferry a lot from now on.
