“Workshop Performance in Ono, Hyogo” by Kenta Nakagome

Kodo Workshop Performance in Ono, Kyoto

This venue is very close to where Tsuyoshi Maeda grew up and many of people who have supported him all along came to see this performance.

Tsuyoshi was so relaxed as he played taiko and sang songs to this audience in response to their warmth and hopes. I’m sure he has kept improving since childhood by performing for them, gaining skill with each performance. I felt that I saw his true roots through this performance. We all enjoyed performing in such a warm atmosphere.

This Workshop Performance programme, directed by Tsuyoshi, premiered at the end of 2013. This current tour is the last tour for this particular programme. We have improved as a small ensemble through our performances every day. I know I will enjoy performing this programme right until the very end of our tour!

“Learning Shishi Odori” by Kenta Nakagome

Learning Kanatsu-ryu Yanagawa Shishi Odori in Iwate

From September 5 through 8, seven Kodo performers (Masaru, Eri, Yuta, Tetsumi, Ryosuke, Naoya and I) went to Esashi in Iwate to learn Kanatsu-ryu Yanagawa Shishi Odori (deer dance) from the locals who uphold this traditional performing art.

(Left) We learned how to make sasara (bamboo props)
(Right) Masaru was allowed to dance with them in costume

The locals taught us in a very strict yet warm manner and conveyed to us their strong, passionate feelings towards their dance. Our connection with them has lasted since the days of our antecedent group Sado no Kuni Ondekoza. We will continue to treasure this relationship and dance this dance with dedication in the years to come, too.

Thank you Kanatsu-ryu Yanagawa Shishi Odori members!

Setting Up for “DADAN”

First, we open all the boxes packed full of our instruments.

These taiko were sent here after our tour in Europe earlier this year, “Kodo One Earth Tour 2014: Legend,” which finished in March.

This is the theater where we have our first performance of “DADAN.”

This time, the programme uses a grand total of TWELVE shime-daiko! (roped drums)

These taiko were packaged up for months on end. We look at their condition and tune each one very carefully.

Tonight is our opening night! I’m looking forward to seeing how the performance turns out!

“Workshop Performance at Myoko Junior High School” by Kenta Nakagome

We gave a Workshop Performance at Myoko Junior High School in Niigata Prefecture.
This school had a great feeling about it… and you could see beautiful snowy mountains from the gymnasium windows.

The children were carefree and energetic and they enjoyed playing taiko during the “Taiko Experience Corner” of the programme.

The sound of their taiko really energized us, making it a memorable performance.

It was fun!

“Workshop Performance in Ishinomaki” by Kenta Nakagome

May 16  Kodo Workshop Performance (Ishinomaki, Miyagi)

Photo: Taro NishitaPhoto: Taro Nishita

We gave a “Workshop Performance” at the Ishinomaki-shi Kahoku Sogo Center in Miyagi Prefecture.
Ishinomaki was greatly damaged by the 2011 Tohoku Pacific Earthquake. Kodo had held performances in Ishinomaki prior to the disaster, and we were happy to be able to perform here once more. The smiles and cheers from the audience who gathered to watch us gave us a power boost, so we put all that power into the sound of our taiko.

After the performance, an aquaintance said to us “Please do come back and give another performance in Ishinomaki.” We look forward to returning here and seeing everyone in Ishinomaki, happy and well.
