“Asakusa Performances: Collecting Donations for a New Folk Performing Arts Center” by Michiko Chida

From June 21-25, during the “Kodo One Earth Tour 2014: Mystery” Asakusa performances, we are asking people to help raise funds to build the Urahama Folk Performing Arts Center (Urahama Minzoku Geino Denshokan).

About Fundraising for Urahama Folk Performing Arts Center (in Japanese)

Please donate to the Urahama Folk Performing Arts Center Construction Fund and help build a new base for the folk arts in an area affected by the Tohoku Pacific Earthquake.

Urahama Nenbutsu Kenbai (sword dance) and  Urahama Shishi Odori (deer dance), two traditional performing arts upheld in the Okirai area of Sanriku in Ofunato City, were seriously affected by the damaging 2011 Tohoku Pacific Earthquake. The equipment for Shishi Odori barely remained, but all the equipment and the base for Nenbutsu Kenbai was lost. Even though they have kept their spirits up, it must have been hard for the people there to see a way forward through this dark situation these past three years.

Last January, the people of Urahama decided to build a folk performing arts center as a base for their traditional performing arts. This facility is their pledge to hand the wonderful regional folk arts, which cultivate their area, down to future generations: it is their vow to not be beaten by the disaster. They have great confidence in the power of traditional folk arts and they are working hard and enthusiastically, encouraging people involved with folk arts in other areas to follow their lead.

Their base was washed away by the tsunami, so they had to keep their equipment in a storage container next to the leader’s house. (Photo from Feb. 2014)

One of the reasons why Kodo wants to help them is that Urahama Shishi Odori is a part of Kanatsuryu Yanagawa Shishi Odori, who have been teaching Shishi Odori to Kodo since 1980. We have the same masters and same dance style, so we are like brothers. Actually, in 2008 some of the Urahama Shishi Odori members joined Kanatsuryu Yanagawa Shishi Odori to perform at our festival on Sado Island, “Earth Celebration.”

念仏剣舞も獅子躍も、太鼓や衣装を劣悪な環境から開放してあげたい。伝承館建設が待たれる。

All the equipment is currently kept in an unsuitable environment. The new building needs to be built as soon as possible.

The Center will be built using personal funds and grants, and also requires 10,000,000 yen in donations to make up the remainder. From January to May, they collected more than half of this amount, but they still need 3,000,000 yen to reach their goal. They are almost there!

The basic amount they are requesting for bank donations is 10,000 yen or more. By donating this amount, your name will be displayed in the Center when it is completed. Kodo has put collection boxes in the exhibition corner at Asakusa Public Hall during the “Mystery” performances, which welcome donations large or small. Thank you in advance for your kind support.

Under the Heartbeat Project, Kodo is supporting the fundraising campaign to build the Urahama Folk Performing Arts Center. We would really appreciate your support and generosity.

“From Fukaura Gakusha (Fukaura Schoolhouse)” by Hirofumi Uenoyama

Fukaura Gakusha (Fukaura Schoolhouse)/ Trial First Year of the “Community Development Course”

Photo: Satoko Maeda

This April, we launched our new “Community Development Course.” It offers the opportunity to learn from Sado’s nature and culture firsthand and uses those experiences to cultivate human resources who will activate local communities. For this first trial year, we have welcomed two trainees: Misaki Nakamura from Kiso, Nagano, and Misato Akazawa from Niigata City. The trainees are based at the former Fukaura Elementary School, which was renovated for a fresh start under the name “Fukaura Gakusha” (Fukaura Schoolhouse). The duo have begun their studies, which center on learning from locals about the area’s agricultural & fishing industries, festivals & traditional performing arts, preservation of historic architectural areas, culture and more.

The trainees produced a special Fukaura Gakusha unveiling event, held on April 20. They gained practical experience by planning and running the event, making fliers, and digging out memorabilia and photo albums that were left in the former school to display as a nostalgic exhibition on the day. The locals who joined us for the unveiling smiled as they reminisced about the school and relived various episodes from the past. It was a valuable experience for me to see firsthand the role this school had played in the region.

On May 4, the trainees took part in the “Kodo Special Performances on Sado Island” special event “Traditional Rice Planting,” under the guidance of master farmer Mr. Kenichiro Aoki. They experienced planting rice by hand in a traditional way using seedings from a semi-irrigated rice nursery. The trainees wore traditional work pants and bamboo hats and they worked very hard with other participants.

During the course of the year ahead, I would like to join the two trainees as they recognize and tackle local issues and problems. Through the trial and error, I hope that we can discover the real identity of “community development.”

The trainees’ reports are being shared on the Kodo Cultural Foundation Facebook page in Japanese. We hope you’ll take a look at their updates.

About the “Community Development Course”
The Kodo Cultural Foundation has gained a wealth of experience by running the Kodo Apprentice Centre to date and to make further use of this know-how, the Foundation has taken the first step in setting up a new course, separate from the course for apprentices hoping to become Kodo performers, called the “Community Development Course.” This new courses aims to cultivate human resources who will activate local communities by using experiences gained learning from the nature and culture of Sado Island.
The Kodo Cultural Foundation would like to start off this course with practical activities that tackle the following themes: “What kind of trainee programme is required to cultivate active human resources for community development?”/ “What is ‘community development’?”/ “How can human resources work independently in community development?”/ etc.

“Fujimotomida Rehearsals” by Tsugumi Yamanaka

We all have round faces. I wonder how many years have passed since we were together at Daisho in Mano*?

After the “Fujimotomida” rehearsals, the three of us took this picture together at the Sado Island Taiko Centre. Their voices were crazily loud during the rehearsals… can you imagine what they’ve got in store for the audience?!

*Daisho in Mano: Kodo used to be based at the former Daisho Elementary School in Mano, fondly called “Daisho.”
