<p>Almost a year has passed since the launch of <a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/en/kodo_taiko_school">Kodo Taiko School</a>. This new initiative is an online school where Kodo performers share the skills and knowledge the ensemble has developed over the years. We conducted a trial course with Cohort 0 in 2021, and currently we are heading into the final lessons of the Cohort 1 course.</p>
<p>I initially felt out of place when I found myself in a teaching position at this early stage of my performing career. Already, I can honestly say that facilitating these courses has become one of the richest learning experiences of my lifetime.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-37204" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814.jpg 1600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-600x600.jpg 600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-1200x1200.jpg 1200w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-370x370.jpg 370w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-120x120.jpg 120w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_5071-TNishita-210814-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When the trial course began, it took a lot of time and effort for the Kodo Taiko School instructors, who are all Kodo performers, to come up with clear ways to explain what we experienced and gained through our training at Kodo Apprentice Centre. It’s challenging to put into words what we</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> learned back then, and what we think and feel </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">as performers now. Kodo doesn’t have a uniform </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">kata </span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">(style of taiko playing, or set form), which made this challenge even more complex. At Kodo, we all strive to create the best sound possible. We acknowledge that everyone&#8217;s body is different, so we always keep in mind that how we play differs from person to person.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The instructor team approached this particular challenge by surveying a number of Kodo performers, and noting the similarities between us. In particular, we sought guidance from Eiichi Saito, the pioneer of Kodo-style workshops, and from Tomohiro Mitome, who frequently teaches taiko players within Kodo and from </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">other</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> teams. We also talked to various guest instructors who teach at Kodo Apprentice Centre and asked for their advice.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our conclusion was that the Kodo method could be defined as the act of playing taiko in the most natural state possible. As Kodo members, it’s an individual quest to find our most natural state and to create the best sound possible. We strive to do that through our daily training. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kodo Taiko School is a place where students can join us on that journey. Every lesson is led by a Kodo performer who explains things in their own unique way. Because we teach a course as a team, you get insight into a range of individual perspectives and approaches, all with the same end goal—achieving a natural state to create optimal sound. I think that’s one of the things that enriches our courses.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I am a member of the instructing team, and I also double as an English interpreter for the lessons because I grew up in the United States. But I often struggle to find the right words. It’s hard to interpret Japanese terms and concepts that don’t have literal English translations, or will not make sense in English in a particular context. Especially on the spot.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, the first roadblock that every Japanese-English interpreter probably bumps into is &#8220;</span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8221; This common Japanese greeting can be literally translated into &#8220;best regards,&#8221; but in certain situations, it&#8217;ll mean &#8220;please share your knowledge and advice with us,&#8221; or &#8220;kindly do a favor for me,&#8221; or something else. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here’s another example. In Japanese, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">futokoro</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a word that explains the space in front of your chest. But it’s more than a word; it’s a concept that changes depending on the activity you’re doing. So it’s different for martial arts, tea ceremony, and taiko. Trying to explain it in one word in English isn’t possible. I needed way more words each time. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(Side Note: I wrote this blog in Japanese first without considering the difficulty of translating into English. The struggle is real&#8230;)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With each passing week, I learned how to explain things better. Interpreting for the senior members allowed me to process their thoughts in my mind twice; once in Japanese and again while I was searching for the right English. While listening to their explanations, I drew on my own knowledge and experiences to find the words I needed. </span></p>
<div id="attachment_37200" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-37200" class="wp-image-37200" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_3528.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="539" /><p id="caption-attachment-37200" class="wp-caption-text">Interpreting for Cohort 0 Guest Instructor Eiichi Saito</p></div>
<div id="attachment_37202" style="width: 509px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-37202" class="wp-image-37202" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_4310-TNishita-220129.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="483" /><p id="caption-attachment-37202" class="wp-caption-text">Interpreting for Cohort 1 Guest Instructor Tomohiro Mitome as he explains how to apply the fundamentals of taiko playing to Odaiko (big drum) playing.</p></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But there were still things that I just couldn&#8217;t explain concisely. Not just while I was interpreting, but when I was teaching as well. I eventually realized that I had trouble explaining certain concepts, simply because I didn&#8217;t know enough about them. A wise man once said, &#8220;if you can&#8217;t explain something simply, you don&#8217;t understand it well enough.&#8221; This quote hit home. Lesson learned.</span></p>
<div id="attachment_37382" style="width: 510px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-37382" class="wp-image-37382" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_3055-1.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="313" /><p id="caption-attachment-37382" class="wp-caption-text">With Instructor Team Leader Yoshie Abe. We&#8217;re working hard to forge meaningful connections with all the students.</p></div>
<div id="attachment_37201" style="width: 509px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-37201" class="wp-image-37201" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/IMG_3825-TNishita-220122.jpg" alt="" width="499" height="591" /><p id="caption-attachment-37201" class="wp-caption-text">With Shogo Komatsuzaki, talking about physical conditioning. At Kodo Taiko School, all the instructors perform on the Kodo stage, so you get to hear practical advice from a performer&#8217;s point of view.</p></div>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For me, getting to experience how the senior members approach and explain this art form firsthand is really inspiring. When I interpret for my fellow instructors, it feels like a VIP experience because I get the chance to go inside their head and take a peek at their way of life, through their eyes. I feel so lucky to have this chance.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This chance comes with a sense of responsibility. I believe it is my duty to share their experience as accurately as possible with taiko enthusiasts all around the world. </span></p>

<p>On 2013, “Kodo One Earth Tour: Legend” came to the university I was attending. This was the first time I saw Kodo live. The three back-to-back <span style="font-style: italic;">O-daiko </span>(big drum) performances were highly memorable. I could not make out who was performing since I watched from the third floor, but I remember thinking, &#8220;just how many performers are back stage on standby in their <span style="font-style: italic;">fundoshi</span> (loincloth), waiting for their turn&#8230;?”</p>
<p>At that time, I was just working on my <span style="font-style: italic;">odaiko</span> solo, so I practiced and composed it by recalling impressions and memories of the performance. Two years later, “Kodo One Earth Tour 2015: Mystery” came to the U.S., and I bought this Legend DVD at the venue without hesitation. I watched it many, many times. This production deeply impressed me and showed me that Kodo has some of the best <span style="font-style: italic;">odaiko</span> performers.</p>

<p>Our 2019 North American tour’s second and third shows were held at Berkeley, a city close to my heart.</p>

<p>Many, many friends and family came to support me, since it’s close to my hometown San Francisco and my alma mater. Both shows, I got caught off guard by the amount of cheers I got during the curtain call, and I got a bit teary, too.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-gallery-qd60c7tZ" data-rl_title="Photo: Takashi Okamoto" data-rl_caption="" title="Photo: Takashi Okamoto"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17061" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s-600x400.jpg" alt="Photo: Takashi Okamoto" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s-370x247.jpg 370w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s-120x80.jpg 120w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_5177-s.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Like the <a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/en/kodo_blog_en/posts-by-member/15829">performance I appeared in last November</a>, it is the most nerve-wracking experience to perform in front of a home crowd. The more I think about the people that know me, the more I pressure myself to show how I’ve grown. However, this time I was able to let go of that thought and be as natural as possible. I aimed to be myself, believing that I’ve grown.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-gallery-qd60c7tZ" data-rl_title="Photo: Takashi Okamoto" data-rl_caption="" title="Photo: Takashi Okamoto"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-img370 wp-image-17066" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s-370x555.jpg" alt="Photo: Takashi Okamoto" width="370" height="555" srcset="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s-370x555.jpg 370w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s-600x900.jpg 600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s-120x180.jpg 120w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/berkeley_1569-s.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px" /></a></p>
<p>The tour has just begun. Many challenges will surely arise, but I’ll take them all on and move forward, step by step. I’ve received the energy to do so from the voices of my friends and family.</p>

<p>This year marks the 50th year of taiko in the United States. It all began in 1968, with the opening of Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka’s San Francisco Taiko Dojo.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-gallery-HqJOc9aD" data-rl_title="Photo: Yui Kamiya" data-rl_caption="" title="Photo: Yui Kamiya"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15821" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-600x400.jpg" alt="Photo: Yui Kamiya" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-370x247.jpg 370w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309-120x80.jpg 120w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3309.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>I started playing taiko under Tanaka-sensei (Mr. Tanaka) when I was 8. Through the training, I was connected to many leaders of the American taiko community. With their support, I decided to apply for the Kodo Apprenticeship Program when I was 22.</p>
<p>This is the third year since I left for Japan. I had the honor of participating in San Francisco Taiko Dojo’s 50th Annual International Taiko Festival as a Kodo junior member on November 10th and 11th. There were many guest performers with connections to Tanaka-sensei from all over the world, making the whole performance four and a half hours long.</p>

<p>The finale piece consisted of the guests soloing on the odaiko (big drum), one after another. With all the performers’ emotions overflowing, the piece became a 45-minute-long masterpiece.</p>
<p>Around the performance, I was able to enjoy exchange with San Jose Taiko and KASA.</p>

<p>It was very nerve wracking to perform in front of this home crowd for the first time in three years. So much so that I had a migraine during the rehearsal&#8230;<br />
But for the performance, I believe I was able to calmly present my natural self. Hopefully I was able to demonstrate how much I’ve changed.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-gallery-HqJOc9aD" data-rl_title="Photo: Yui Kamiya" data-rl_caption="" title="Photo: Yui Kamiya"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-15822" src="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-600x400.jpg" alt="Photo: Yui Kamiya" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-600x400.jpg 600w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-370x247.jpg 370w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356-120x80.jpg 120w, https://www.kodo.or.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_3356.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>I brought back many words of encouragement, and of course, hugs.<br />
It&#8217;s only a few more months until the final selection, when Kodo chooses which junior members can become fully-fledged performers.<br />
My friends gifted me the strength to keep pushing myself. I am looking forward to greeting everyone again with a smile during the US tour next year.</p>
