Kodo will appear on a CNN program that takes a look at what people in Japan are doing to ensure that traditional Japanese performing arts, aesthetics, and skills are passed on to the next generation. The program has four six-minute segments and Kodo Apprentice Centre features in a segment about taiko. Tune in to see the apprentices’ daily life, training, and an interview with one of their instructors, Kodo performer Tomohiro Mitome.

“Michi” means a road or path. This performance is based on the core repertoire that Kodo has upheld for almost half a century, since the days of its antecedent group, Sado no Kuni Ondekoza (1971-81).

Michi focuses on preserving Kodo’s unique “DNA” by drawing on the iconic form found within classic Kodo repertoire and carefully sharing the essence of those traditions with the next generation.

Under the direction of Kodo Ensemble Leader Yuichiro Funabashi, the 2019 season of “Michi” will tour throughout Japan until December 22.

In 2018, UX (Niigata TV 21) is celebrating its 35th year with a special project, “Niigata Jiman” (The Pride of Niigata). A camera crew came to Sado Island to follow Kodo’s Hayato Otsuka for a feature in this series, capturing his daily rehearsals and his feelings about Niigata Prefecture. Recently NHK Niigata followed Kodo’s apprentices through their daily life and training to create a special programme that went on to be broadcast nationwide in Japan. In an exciting new progression, an English-language version of the programme has been created for NHK World to share online with international audiences worldwide. It’s a free-to-watch 32-min. programme that will take you to Sado Island to see behind the scenes of life at Kodo Apprentice Centre where young trainees strive to make it to the Kodo stage one day.
