They used to rely on the apprentices in the year above for all kinds of things, but those senior apprentices have left the nest, so\u00a0now there are just eight of them living here: 7 males and 1 female. The number of apprentices has halved, so they have to\u00a0cooperate more than ever and figure out how to live together comfortably, as a new team. Otherwise, they will not be able to concentrate on their studies nor improve as a class.<\/p>\n<p>On top of those changes, a powerful, relentless cold\u00a0wave hit Sado during their transition period. It was the first winter on Sado for the new 2nd year apprentices, so they looked nervous to find out just how cold it would get. One night, when it was forecast to reach a low of -4\u2103 , one of the apprentices anxiously asked me:<br \/>\n&#8220;Is is going to get\u00a0even colder?&#8221;<br \/>\nI said, &#8220;No, no, this is the coldest it gets on\u00a0Sado. It won&#8217;t get any\u00a0colder than this, so you can wear\u00a0your warmest clothes now. You&#8217;ll be all right, you will survive!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They had\u00a0a\u00a0dance practice day on one of those freezing cold\u00a0days in February.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5181\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC02932.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5181\" class=\"wp-image-5181 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSC02932-340x191.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Michiko Chida\" width=\"340\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ohara-bushi<\/span> Dance Practice<\/p><\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h5>\n<p>While teaching them <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ohara-bushi<\/span>, a <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Tsugaru<\/span> dance from Aomori Prefecture in Northern Honshuu, Chieko Kojima looked outside and happily exclaimed, &#8220;Perfect!\u00a0It really looks like Aomori!&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5182\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0115.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5182\" class=\"wp-image-5182 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_0115-680x453.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Michiko Chida\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Onikenbai<\/span>\u00a0(demon sword dance) Practice<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Yasuhiko Ishihara, the head of the Apprentice Centre, teaches them\u00a0demon sword dance <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Onikenbai<\/span>, which is a traditional performing art from\u00a0Iwate Prefecture, also located in northern Japan. He told them, &#8220;The locals practice this dance outside at this time of year&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Year 33 apprentices must have become both physically and mentally stronger since last year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I hope they will have grown even\u00a0more\u00a0by the time the new 1st year apprentices join them in April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb. 21, 2015 Year 33 class of Kodo Apprentices finished their 1st year of our programme in January and started their 2nd year in February.
