The rehearsals\u00a0for Kodo 2015 Special Concert “Michi” are well underway.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0this performance, I will become the first-ever female Kodo performer to play Monochrome<\/span> on stage.<\/p>\n

We have to use\u00a0such precision when we practice\u00a0Monochrome<\/span>… you could cut through the tension in the rehearsal hall with a knife.<\/p>\n

The pianissimo parts in this composition are played in a tiny 15mm world. We have to control our drumsticks to make strokes within this minute\u00a0range.\u00a0Eiichi Saito<\/a> says, “Don’t\u00a0move\u00a0your sticks up and down, just\u00a0let them fall from your tanden<\/span> (core\/abdomen).” But this drumming technique is\u00a0far more difficult than I had ever\u00a0imagined. (Apparently, in the old days, Kodo members would light\u00a0a candle and practice drumming like this until it had\u00a0burned\u00a0down completely.)<\/p>\n

My practice for this piece is rather\u00a0stoic and subtle and it makes me\u00a0connect an array of nerves that I never had to think about before.
