Kodo Apprentice Recital: Okinawan Dance Muribushi<\/span><\/h2>\n

The 2nd year apprentices spent one\u00a0month learning Okinawan dance\u00a0Muribushi,<\/span>\u00a0during this hot summer season. Today, they performed it for all the Kodo members and\u00a0staff.<\/p>\n

Okinawan dance expert Mitsue Kinjo<\/a> has been teaching our\u00a0apprentices for the last\u00a0twenty\u00a0years. By\u00a0learning this unique, traditional Okinawan dance style, the apprentices are taught a fundamental\u00a0attitude towards learning things. This\u00a0is a timeless lesson.<\/p>\n

“When you aim to create something new, first you have to take something in and absorb it within\u00a0yourself. Then, something will be created from that. A new creation\u00a0will come from something that takes root inside you and breathes. It is not something that you try to show or make decorative.”<\/p>\n

Mitsue works hard with apprentices, actually, even harder than the apprentices, using her body and voice to passionately show and convey to them the importance of creating your own core.<\/p>\n

I am sure that when the Kodo members, and the staff who were formerly apprentices, watch this annual recital that are reminded of their own time practicing as apprentices, frantically trying to use\u00a0their bodies and minds well.<\/p>\n

So, how were they today?<\/p>\n

“Your hearts were all together, as one. You really did your best.”<\/p>\n

After gruelling\u00a0practices, Mitsue’s warm words echoed in\u00a0the apprentices’ hearts. No one was\u00a0selfish at all, and as individuals they all pulled together to\u00a0perform together, which created such great power. Maybe today they understood the true meaning of Muribushi <\/span>at last,\u00a0which translates as\u00a0“a group of stars.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
