This is Tomohiro Mitome, leader of taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo.<\/p>\n

In July, the weather was mostly\u00a0sunny\u00a0despite it being\u00a0the\u00a0rainy season here. However, there were also\u00a0heavy rain and flood warnings and landslides ocurred in some areas. Thank you to\u00a0everyone who expressed their concern for our safety.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0our tours, the “Kodo One Earth Tour: Mystery” Japan tour members returned to Sado after two\u00a0and half months on the road and the Kodo “DADAN” Europe tour members left at the beginning of July, gave performances in Spain and France, and have now safely returned to Sado.<\/p>\n

Now, it is August.
\nAugust means it is time for our annual festival “Earth Celebration<\/a>” (EC).<\/p>\n

This year Earth Celebration will be held for the 27th time. The first evening\u2019s Shiroyama Concert “UMI<\/span> \/ OCEAN” <\/em>will feature the entire Kodo group, from its youngest performers to its veterans. For the second night\u2019s concert “DAICHI<\/span> \/ EARTH,” Kodo has invited\u00a0\u201cBLUE TOKYO<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0For the third night\u2019s concert “SHUKUSAI<\/span> \/ CELEBRATION,” \u00a0Kodo has invited two groups: BLUE TOKYO and\u00a0\u201cDAZZLE<\/a>,\u201d as well as drummer Tetsuya Kajiwara<\/a> as\u00a0a special guest. We will hold concerts for three-days.<\/p>\n

The Shiroyama Concerts, EC\u2019s main concert events, take place up on the hill in Shiroyama Park\u2019s lush green surroundings. A star-filled sky and the chirp of cicadas complete this natural outdoor arena. This is one of the only chances you get each year to lie back on the grass and watch Kodo perform outside.<\/p>\n

Concerts are not the only focus of Earth Celebration. You can watch the pre-event\u00a0Noh performance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0take workshops<\/a>\u00a0to learn taiko, Sado traditional performing arts and dance. You can experience the history, nature and culture of Sado through “Exploring the Charm of Sado Island<\/a>” activities, watch free\u00a0Fringe Event<\/a>\u00a0performances, and enjoy the international\u00a0food and goods at Harbour Market<\/a>. These are just some of the\u00a0many things that will be on offer\u00a0at the festival!<\/p>\n

\nThis year, EC Theatre is\u00a0back on the lineup. I will be taking part in this small ensemble performance,\u00a0called “Kodo Dai Ginjo \u201cSeasoned Quintet<\/a>.\u201d We have been rehearsing and rehearsing and it will be a special performance, a programme only possible by a small group of us in an intimate venue! We hope you can come along!
\nSo, I hope you will join us for all of EC, not only the main concerts. Please come along for the full three days to\u00a0thoroughly enjoy all that the festival has to offer.<\/p>\n

During the festival, people from all over Japan and all around the world gather in\u00a0the south-west corner of Sado Island, the Ogi Peninsula where Kodo is based. During\u00a0the three days of festivities, I hope\u00a0both repeaters and first-timers alike will enjoy their summer stay\u00a0on Sado in their own\u00a0way, at their\u00a0own pace. We want to have a good time with all of you!
