Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Yoshie Sunahata was a budding percussionist in her high school brass band when she first saw Kodo in concert. She was enraptured by the sound of the traditional Japanese drum, and upon graduation she immediately traveled to Sado Island to try out for the Kodo Apprenticeship Programme.
Through Kodo's ongoing 'One Earth Tour,' Yoshie travels across Japan and around the world, giving over 100 performances a year. In 2006, 2008, and 2009, Yoshie was a featured player in collaborations with the Dutch supergroup 'Bløf,' and her duets with their lead vocalist brought down the house every time. As a pivotal part of Kodo's all-women unit 'cocon,' Yoshie is furthering her pursuit of new forms of feminine expression in the male-dominated taiko world. Through work in other art genres, she is also is widening her own channels of artistic expression and sharing the joy of taiko with an ever-expanding audience.
Performance schedule will be announced later.
