Masayuki Sakamoto entered the Kodo Apprentice Centre in 2003 and became a Kodo member in 2006. Mainly featured in solo or center positions on taiko drums, he is a pivotal performer who often emerges as a leader on stage, deftly performing Kodo's wide-ranging repertoire with both power and sensitivity. Ever since his early days with the ensemble, Sakamoto has performed on both domestic and international tours. He collaborates with artists from a myriad of genres, and has also recently participated in works directed by other groups. Sakamoto is one of three drum soloists to appear in the climax of Kodo's latest One Earth Tour production, "Chaos." In 2015, he designed a tunable okedo daiko (barrel drum) called "Kanade," which is now available from Asano Taiko. This innovative new taiko drum went on to win the "2015 Good Design Award."
