One of the goals of Earth Celebration is to foster mutual understanding through shared experiences. Our aim is to make EC a festival not just to observe, but to actively participate in as well, so our workshops have a place at EC as important as the Shiroyama Concerts. Workshops provide participants with the opportunity to play music, make handicrafts, and experience the magic of performing folk arts from all over Japan, not to mention the vibrant traditional arts of Sado Island.
Styles may differ, but "drumming a beat" is universal. All with their own styles, our drummers will show you all the charms of taiko, the Japanese drum. Young or young at heart, male or female, beginner or seasoned pro, give it your best hit!
This year we have a choice of three traditional Japanese dances taught by performers and dance specialists. Let them guide the rhythm within you into new forms of self-expression.
How about trying your hand at the cymbals or the bamboo flute? This year we have two workshops that teach the basics, a chappa workshop offering easy-to-play rhythm on the cymbals, and a shinobue flute workshop where you’ll not only learn to make basic sounds, you’ll even learn to play a simple tune. Blue summer skies and a cool Sado breeze provide the perfect backdrop for these beginner workshops.
Sado is abundant in high quality bamboo, making bamboo craft very popular on the island. Come and learn how to make your own bamboo flute or bamboo basket from skilled local craftsmen.
