Back by popular demand, the Kasuga Ondeko workshop teaches a quintessential Sado Island traditional performing art, onidaiko (demon drumming and dance). A treat for both body and soul, this two-and-a-half-hour workshop focuses on the basic “Osu Oni” (male demon) dance for beginners. If we have repeat participants, we will also be happy to organize an advanced tutorial on demand, either for the dance or taiko parts. After the workshop, join our special fringe event that same day and spend the afternoon dancing the streets of Ogi in traditional festival style.
Ryotsu Kasuga Onigumi
Since its foundation in 1932 by parishioners of the Kasuga Shrine, Ryotsu Kasuga Onigumi have performed every year at their annual festival on April 14, even during the war years. Since the mid 1960's, they have actively been involved with Kodomo Ondeko (Children's Demon Drumming). Today, those children have grown into the main adult force of Kasuga Onigumi. The dance has two main types, "male" and "female", as well as a dance used on special occasions called "Ito Tori," which is a mixture of the most difficult dances. With a basic 3-beat base rhythm, each drummer will show you his own drumming style.
