Dec. 14 Folk\u00a0Performing Arts Lecture and Workshop in Fukuoka<\/h2>\n

I visited Fukuoka last week on tour with “Kodo One Earth Tour: Eternity.” On Dec. 14, the\u00a0day before our first\u00a0performance at Hakataza Theater, I was invited as a guest speaker to give\u00a0a “Folk Performing Arts Lecture” to\u00a0high school students from around\u00a0Fukuoka Prefecture. I gave a talk\u00a0and led\u00a0a workshop. To my surprise, about 160 students gathered for the event!<\/p>\n

I heard that the teachers from the various high schools would like to start introducing local traditional performing arts to their school taiko clubs. So,\u00a0at the beginning of the lecture, I talked a little bit about the reasons and intentions behind Kodo’s integration of\u00a0traditional performing arts from all over Japan into our performances, and how we\u00a0go about doing that. Then I led a workshop for them.<\/p>\n

At the supervising teachers\u2019 request, I did a workshop based on\u00a0the theme of “Practise Methods\u00a0that Don’t Require\u00a0Taiko.” Apparently all of their schools have a lot more taiko club members than taiko drums (…can something be done about that?), so they gave me this unique theme to suit their particular situation.<\/p>\n

I had never given a\u00a0workshop based on a theme like this before, nor had I ever\u00a0had so many participants in one\u00a0workshop, so I really puzzled over what to do while I was preparing for this workshop. I decided to do\u00a0rhythm training by clapping our hands and rhythm practice using kuchi shoga<\/span> or\u00a0vocalization of the rhythm. We did both of these activities\u00a0rather thoroughly and the students concentrated hard until the very end and seemed to enjoy themselves, too.<\/p>\n

I think it was\u00a0a fruitful session,\u00a0thanks to the encouraging support from my fellow\u00a0Kodo members.<\/p>\n

The lecture and workshop gave me a good opportunity to reflect on the basics, while\u00a0the serious attitude,\u00a0excited facial expressions, and laughter of the young participants\u2019 gave us a lot of energy.
