I gave a talk\u00a0and led\u00a0a workshop. To my surprise, about 160 students gathered for the event!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CIMG7095.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4381\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CIMG7095-680x510.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Narumi Matsuda\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I heard that the teachers from the various high schools would like to start introducing local traditional performing arts to their school taiko clubs. So,\u00a0at the beginning of the lecture, I talked a little bit about the reasons and intentions behind Kodo&#8217;s integration of\u00a0traditional performing arts from all over Japan into our performances, and how we\u00a0go about doing that. Then I led a workshop for them.<\/p>\n<p>At the supervising teachers\u2019 request, I did a workshop based on\u00a0the theme of &#8220;Practise Methods\u00a0that Don&#8217;t Require\u00a0Taiko.&#8221; Apparently all of their schools have a lot more taiko club members than taiko drums (&#8230;can something be done about that?), so they gave me this unique theme to suit their particular situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CIMG7134.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4383\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CIMG7134-340x255.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Narumi Matsuda\" width=\"340\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had never given a\u00a0workshop based on a theme like this before, nor had I ever\u00a0had so many participants in one\u00a0workshop, so I really puzzled over what to do while I was preparing for this workshop. I decided to do\u00a0rhythm training by clapping our hands and rhythm practice using <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">kuchi shoga<\/span> or\u00a0vocalization of the rhythm.
