We also came here with\u00a0&#8220;Legend&#8221; two years ago and we were\u00a0happy to be back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/20141005_120744.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3450\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/20141005_120744-340x190.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Tetsumi Hanaoka\" width=\"340\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you about one type of drum we use on stage. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Shimedaiko\u00a0<\/span>(the small drums shown above) have drum heads that are bound together by either bolts or one long rope. Kodo always uses roped\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">shimedaiko<\/span>\u00a0so we can create an unconstrained, mellow\u00a0yet clear,\u00a0shrill\u00a0sound. But because we tune our <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">shimedaiko<\/span> before\u00a0every performance, the ropes wear out and eventually snap. The ropes are made of hemp and they are very stiff, so we pull them and beat them every day to make them just the right softness.
