But\u00a0this project aims\u00a0to give new purpose to the\u00a0Fukaura\u00a0Schoolhouse on Sado, a recently closed-down\u00a0elementary and junior high school. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Mirai no Gakko<\/span> (School of the Future) is produced by Yasuhiro Karakawa, Senior Manager of Market Creation Strategies &#8211; Asia at the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University. He is a member of the team at <a href=\"http:\/\/ifs-miraiken.jp\/\">ifs Future Laboratory<\/a> and planned a research trip last summer to the Fukaura Schoolhouse, which tied in to his annual research theme, &#8220;Inconvenient, yet\u00a0comfortable.&#8221; It was a two-day\/three-night program for Mr. Karakawa&#8217;s acquaintances\u00a0(who he describes as an interesting bunch) and we, Kodo, offered them a taiko workshop to suit the program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/10647826_823810527650167_1597275134_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3257\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/10647826_823810527650167_1597275134_n-680x452.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Amazon Kajiyama\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the presentation, Mr. Karakawa\u00a0briefly introduced this project and some of the summer participants&#8217;\u00a0impressions on it. To let\u00a0the audience experience\u00a0non-verbal communication, I brought a\u00a0taiko drum along to show\u00a0them how fun it feels to\u00a0make one unified sound all together. The sound of taiko made all of them smile, even the serious-looking businessmen in suits. This project gives people the opportunity to come to Sado, play taiko, and through that, they can open up, free their minds,\u00a0discuss and start to solve a range\u00a0of issues, for example job or future-related concerns.
