Last year, his\u00a0wife\u00a0passed away, so\u00a0Yoko\u00a0asked me to go with her to light incense and offer a prayer for Mrs. Hatakeyama.<\/p>\n<p>This couple always came to see our annual December performances on Sado Island together. When we visited their home for the first time, it was like a little art gallery. Their house is an old Japanese-style home, which\u00a0was remodeled\u00a0to make the most of the traditional style, and\u00a0they have decorated it with\u00a0a variety of artworks, creating a special harmony with both old and new pieces.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2514 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0092-680x510.jpeg\" alt=\"IMG_0092\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">From the left: Yoko Fujimoto, Yoshikazu Fujimoto and Mr. Shigeki Hatakeyama<\/h5>\n<p>Mr. Hatakeyama\u00a0was born in 1944 and turned\u00a070 years old this year. He was a high school P.E. teacher in the seventies when he taught us. Ever since, he has made and sent a wonderful new-year card to Kodo every year. We found out he had made these with his wife. She\u00a0was a also teacher, who taught Home Economics at Sado Girls&#8217; High. After losing his beloved wife, Mr. Hatakeyama decided he had to make the art gallery that they had been thinking of\u00a0opening together in the\u00a0barn in front of their\u00a0house. They wanted it to be a place for friends to come together. So he has been working away, establishing\u00a0it with help\u00a0from\u00a0his friends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0084.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2515 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kodo.or.jp\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_0084-340x255.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Yoshikazu Fujimoto\" width=\"340\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his gallery, there are some works created by Yoko and I on\u00a0display. Some were\u00a0made using\u00a0my old bachi (drumsticks) and another piece is a picture on\u00a0a large\u00a0white panel, which Mr. Hatakeyama adorned with a tri-color decoration. So, this piece is a\u00a0collaborative work created by the three\u00a0of us.
