Apprenticeship Details

1st year: General Curriculum, 10-month programme (April 2010 - January 2011)

As well as learning to live communally, you will learn about certain basics of traditional Japanese culture and how to develop your body specifically to play taiko and dance. Curriculum content details:

Music lessons (drumming, dancing, singing, playing flute, etc.), lectures on Sado's environment, culture, history and traditions, farming (rice culture and vegetable gardening), cooking, tea ceremony, Noh/Kyogen, film appreciation, reading, experiencing Sado's local festivals, physical training, on-site training through assisting taiko workshops, Earth Celebration, Kodo concerts on Sado... and more.

2nd year: Specialized Curriculum, 1-year programme (February 2011 - January 2012)

In addition to the continuation of first-year studies, you will be challenged to develop practical skills by participating in Kodo's activities. Depending on whether you wish to become a performer or a staff member, programme contents will vary.

The second year programme include Kodo ensemble performances on Sado Island, workshops for school trip groups, practice with Kodo members.

For apprentices who hope to become Kodo staff members, the apprenticeship includes practical work experience at the Kodo Office.

Notes

  • In the second year of the programme, the course is tailored to suit those hoping to become Kodo stage performers and those hoping to become Kodo office staff.
  • There will be a review of the first year of apprenticeship to determine which individuals will be invited to advance to the second year.
  • The Kodo Cultural Foundation is now setting up an additional practical training course called 'Studies in Sado Community Establishment.' This course is separate from the Apprentice Centre and available to participants who complete the general course during their first year of the apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices usually have one day off a week on average, and a short winter vacation at the end of January.
  • Apprentices may not drink alcohol or smoke while they are in the programme. Mobile phones are not allowed during the apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices may not undertake part-time work during the programme.

Fees

  • 70,000 yen/ month (Consists of: Living Expenses 30,000 yen, Education Expenses 40,000 yen), paid in two installments
  • At the beginning of each course year, an Equipment/Materials Fee of 110,000 yen is required. (Consists of: Facilities Maintenance Fee 30,000 yen, Instrument Maintenance Fee 50,00 yen, Course Materials Fee 30,000 yen)
