The Kodo Apprentice Centre seeks apprentices from near and far to study in the rich natural and cultural surroundings of Sado Island, where they learn "new traditions" through hands-on experiences to pass on to the next generation. The two-year programme teaches a general curriculum in the first year about the basics of traditional Japanese culture, and in the second year the course is a specialized curriculum that develops practical skills by taking part in Kodo's various activities.

On completion of the programme, apprentices hoping to become Kodo members (performers, staff) may be selected to become probationary members. Probationary members spend a further year training on the job and can become full-fledged Kodo members if they pass the final stage of selection.

Apprenticeship Requirements

  • Any healthy person over 18 years of age (as of Apr. 1, 2013) may apply.

It is possible to visit the Kodo Apprenticeship Centre before applying to the program. Please contact us for details.

Note: Our #1 F.A.Q. in English is "Do I need to be able to speak Japanese to become an apprentice?" The answer is yes. All instruction is given in Japanese, and it is important to understand instructions and what is being taught thoroughly. Strong communication skills in Japanese are also essential to the communal living experience. If you do not speak Japanese but wish to apply for the Kodo Apprentice Centre program, please pursue Japanese language studies before you make your application.
